BODY COMPOSITION ANALYSES
A dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) body composition scan will accurately measure the distribution of lean muscle, fat, and bone mass. It is fast, painless and non-invasive. The scan can measure the entire body or regions (e.g. arms or legs). Weighing yourself or measuring your Body Mass Index provides information on your weight, but offers no insight into your body composition.
In contrast, DEXA body composition scan accurately assesses body composition and enables you to track changes in body fat and muscle mass. This test is particularly important for people embarking and tracking their weight loss, whether it be via diet, bariatric surgery or pharmacological interventions including Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro.
A body composition DEXA scan is more accurate than other technologies, including bioelectrical impedance and skinfold thickness measurements and is considered the “gold-standard.”
Results from a DEXA body composition scan can be used to develop a personalised program with your healthcare team. Sequential measurements can also be used to modify management, optimise body composition to achieve your metabolic and health goals.
